Desert Sun: Housing vouchers fail to follow market trends

To say life hasn’t been easy for Monica Rubio would be an understatement. After being sexually abused as a child, the single mom struggled with drug addiction for 23 years, before she was able to face her trauma and seek help to provide a better life for herself and her two youngest children. Rubio is one of 8541 participants in Riverside County, who receive assistance for themselves and their families through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Housing Choice Voucher Program. The program, previously referred to as “Section 8” helps low-income families and individuals find and keep housing they can afford by supplementing their income with rent vouchers. Increasing housing costs in Southern California have made it challenging for many low-and middle-income residents to find quality housing they can afford.
